Schedule for 2019-20

Black Archive Schedule For 2019-20: The 13th Doctor, The Day Of The Doctor And More…

Obverse Books is pleased to announce the schedule for the Black Archive up to the end of 2020,
including two books looking at episodes from Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the Doctor.

These 19 titles come on top of the six already announced for January to June 2019, and mean that in
2019 and 2020 the Black Archive will examine stories featuring every Doctor to date – including the
War Doctor, the Curator and the Boy in the Barn.

More importantly, we will be looking for the first time at scripts credited to such Doctor Who
luminaries as Terry Nation, Malcolm Hulke, Terrance Dicks, David Fisher, Mark Gatiss and Chris
Chibnall.

The books on the 13th Doctor stories were commissioned as the 2018 series aired. Our book on Pete
McTighe’s futuristic corporate satire Kerblam! is co-written by Naomi Jacobs and Thomas
Rodebaugh (responsible for the Black Archives on, respectively, Human Nature / The Family of Blood
and The Face of Evil), while blogger and critic Samuel Maleski examines Chibnall’s Sheffield gothic
story Arachnids in the UK.

Other authors for this phase of the Archive include Kaldor City scriptwriter Fiona Moore writing on
The Robots of Death, Kit Pedler’s biographer Michael Seely exploring The Tenth Planet, and prolific
Doctor Who tie-in writer Jonathan Morris addressing The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

Returning authors include James Cooray Smith, responsible for the critically applauded Archives on
The Massacre and The Ultimate Foe and now turning his attention to The Underwater Menace, and
Jonathan Dennis, who previously wrote the Archive on Ghost Light, analysing Vengeance on Varos.

During 2020 the Archive celebrates three milestones – two of Doctor Who’s and one of our own. The
50th anniversary of the broadcast of Doctor Who and The Silurians will be marked by our release of
Robert Smith?’s book on the story in February, while The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang receives a
10th anniversary study by Philip Bates in June.

Finally, December 2020 sees the release of our 50th Black Archive title. This celebrates Doctor Who’s
own 50th anniversary story, The Day of the Doctor, and is written by our second Hugo Award
nominated author, noted genre critic Alasdair Stuart. It will be accompanied by a special bonus
volume covering the mini-episode The Night of the Doctor and written by James Cooray Smith.

With some minor adjustments to the order of the titles already announced for early 2019, the full
